The Italian Influence – History of Scottish Italians

Economic security was the driving force that led a multitude of Italian to flee from their country into Scotland during the end of the 19th century. They settled and prospered in a foreign country and even managed to influence the cultures they found there.

These immigrants did not initially promote their food cuisine but they went into the fish and chip industry. This is because the overhead cost for starting such a business was minute, only a stove and pan was needed. Also there was a ready supply of various fish commodities in the market. Therefore the very first Italian restaurant Glasgow was actually fish and chips restaurants.

In the 1930s there were very many established Italian businesses. These were family run shops that mainly dealt in food production. One renowned restaurant of that time is the Valvona & Crolla in Edinburgh. Another Italian family – the Nardini family built the largest espresso bar in Britain. Most Italians prospered as ice cream manufacturers and as deli lords.

Would it not be wonderful to find a place that could deliver us food at our home or office and that too at a reasonable cost? I would love to find a place that could provide meal delivery daily without me having to make a call and place an order. Given the busy life styles of people today, one finds it difficult to daily find a restaurant and then call them up and check with them about their menu and then place an order and wait for it to come. Once the food arrives, we then hope and pray that the food is good and it is not as bad as it was on some other day.

Instead, if we could find a place that knew exactly what we needed and more importantly at what time we needed our meal and would deliver it to us, that would be great.
